DNR GPS, freeware from the Minnesota DNR, will convert tracks and waypoints to shapefiles, and is the best option for talking to Garmin GPS units. It will also convert KML files to shapefiles. It was previously called DNR Garmin.
When you open the shapefile in MICRODEM, you are likely to have a number of fields that you do not need. You can hide these fields, and then save the database or shapefiles with a report leaving only the fields you want.File, Save to, FilePick ESRI shapfileSelect name for the exportDatabase (shapefile) to open on a map in MICRODEM. Importing GPS tracks and waypointsTurn on GPS, and attach cable to PC.
Set the GPS port, on the GPS menu.
Use the Track or Waypoints menu options to download from the GPS.
Use the File, Save To, File option. You want "unprojected" shapefiles. For tracks, save as either point or line shapefiles for the easiest import into MICRODEM.
For waypoints, save as point shapefiles for the easiest import into MICRODEM.
Converting KML files (or GPS XML file, GPX extension):Save just the line or points from Google Earth as a KML file.
Insure that you saved the file as KML and not KMZ. You can re-save in Google Earth, or the Uncompress Zip option in MICRODEM which can uncompress a KMZ file.
Use File, Load from file, and pick the KML file.
Use File, Save to, File. Pick ESRI shapfile

Does anyone know how to interface a Garmin GPS 78 Marine GPS with their computer to manage waypoints (upload, download, save, etc.) Previously I was using the MN DNR Garmin tool, but it no longer recognizes the GPS. Any solutions are welcome Thanks
Basically, just make sure that DNR Garmin is communicating with the device. (For me it was as simple as setting the "Auto Connect to GPS" option under the GPS menu)I was not able to download the usual "Waypoint -> Download" way but noticed that the unit now saves files as GPX right on the device.
I'm pretty sure you can still upload and download tracks, waypoints, and routes with the latest version of DNR Garmin, but it seems that the interface that Garmin has put in on these newer models makes it a little more cumbersome to get data off the units. But this was 3 or 4 years ago. They now have a version for ArcGIS 10 and claim to be able to download directly into a geodatabase. (The early version only downloaded to a shapefile but was able to upload lines and points from a geodatabase features class, shapefile or a CAD layer.)
EasyGPS is the free, easy way to upload and download waypoints, routes, and tracks between your Garmin eTrex 10 GPS and your Windows computer or laptop. Backup your favorite Garmin POIs, create and send new waypoints and geocaches to your GPS, or print a map of your GPS tracklog. To get started, download your free copy of EasyGPS.
ExpertGPS also lets you view your GPS data over topo maps, aerial photos, and your own scanned trail maps. If you're serious about getting the most out of your GPS, check out the free trial of ExpertGPS, the ultimate mapping software download for your Garmin eTrex 10 GPS.
Since QGIS uses GPX files, you need a way to convert other GPS file formats toGPX. This can be done for many formats using the free program GPSBabel, which isavailable at This program can also transfer GPSdata between your computer and a GPS device. QGIS uses GPSBabel to do thesethings, so it is recommended that you install it. However, if you just want toload GPS data from GPX files you will not need it. Version 1.2.3 of GPSBabel isknown to work with QGIS, but you should be able to use later versions withoutany problems.
QGIS can use GPSBabel to download data from a GPS device directly as new vectorlayers. For this we use the Download from GPS tab of the GPSTools dialog (see Figure_GPS_2). Here, we select the type of GPS device, theport that it is connected to (or USB if your GPS supports this), the feature typethat you want to download, the GPX file where the data should be stored, and thename of the new layer.
%type will be replaced by -w if you are downloading waypoints,-r if you are downloading routes and -t if you are downloading tracks. These are command-line options that tell GPSBabel which feature type to download.
As described in previous sections QGIS uses GPSBabel to download points/tracksdirectly in the project. QGIS comes out of the box with a pre-defined profileto download from Garmin devices. Unfortunately there is a bug #6318 that does not allow create other profiles,so downloading directly in QGIS using the GPS Tools is at the moment limited toGarmin USB units.
Connect the unit. Open GPS Tools and use type=garmin serial and port=usb:Fill the fields Layer name and Output file. Sometimesit seems to have problems saving in a certain folder, using something likec:\temp usually works.

TrailRunner is probably the most popular GPS app for Macs and TrailRunner mini is a slimmed down version designed for runners, hikers and travelers of all kinds. It allows you to plan routes on maps using the free OpenStreetMap service and can import data in GPX, TCX, PWX and KML file formats. This means you import data from apps that use the GPS on an iPhone (such as RaceBunny and Trails) and export them in KML or GPX format. You can then re-watch your travels using GoogleEarth.
The basic version of rubiTrack is free but has limitations such as 30 days Cloud import, limited WiFi syncing and lacks many of the features of the full version such as Weight and Health data import, Bluetooth Heart Rate recording and Weather Info. rubiTrack also has a thriving forum of users and both the community and developers are responsive to problems or issues. 2ff7e9595c
